Mobile phone ringtones are still a fairly new concept, because mobile phones, just like computers, and cars, started out as functional technology. Soon, though mobile phones evolved into fun pieces of equipment, and ringtones as well as videos, cameras and text messaging were added to the phones’ trappings.

Ringtones for mobile phones are simply computer programs that are stored on the mobile phone’s memory chip. The only purpose for this chip is to tell the microprocessor what sounds the mobile phone’s speaker should belt out when the receiver picks up an incoming cell call.

Nearly all, if not all, mobile phones manufactured now are ringtone capable. This means that they already have a hefty range of notes stored in their memories. The ringtone programming just has to tell the mobile phone processor which of these stored notes should be played at what speed and in what order. This arrangement makes possible a nearly unlimited number of mobile ringtones.

The first step to add ringtones to a mobile phone is finding and choosing your favourite ring tones. There are many dozens of sites on the Web that offer ringtones. While some of these sites charge you to use and download their ringtones, others offer them for free. If you’re looking for free ringtones the most likely choices are classical pieces, whose copyrights have expired.
Once you choose your ringtones, you’ll have to add them to your mobile phone’s memory. While there are several ways to do that, the easiest way, by far, is to send the ringtones to your phone by airwaves.

Nokia was the originator of this method. All you have to do is send an SMS (short messaging service), which is a short text message. This SMS will contain the program that installs the ringtone or ringtones on your phone. It’s as simple as that
